Heroic Losers (2019)

Set against the backdrop of the infamous Corralito financial crisis of 2001, the film "Heroic Losers" unfolds in the humble town of Alsina, nestled in the eastern part of Argentina, near the Atlantic Ocean. This once lively town is grappling with a dwindling population and resources, but hope flickers in the form of Fermín Pelassi, a former soccer player, and his wife Lidia. The couple dreams of revitalizing Alsina by transforming an abandoned silo into a cooperative, thereby creating employment opportunities for the locals. Their vision galvanizes a motley crew of townsfolk including the self-proclaimed anarchist Antonio Fontana, the station chief Rolo Belaúnde, the explosives expert Atanasio Medina, the businesswoman Carmen Largio, and the lovable, albeit naive, Gómez brothers - José and Eladio. Together, they pool a total of $158,000, their collective life savings, to purchase the silo. Since Alsina doesn't have a bank, Fermín and Lidia entrust their funds to Alvarado, the bank manager in the neighbouring town of Villagrán. However, the very next day, the Argentine government declares a nationwide bank freeze, the Corralito, trapping their hard-earned money in Alvarado's bank. Tragedy strikes when a car accident takes Lidia's life and leaves Fermín gravely injured. A year later, Fermín, still mourning his wife and now cared for by his son Rodrigo, learns of Alvarado's deceit. Their money had been transferred to a corrupt lawyer, Fortunato Manzi, who stashed it in a bunker on a cow ranch. Driven by a desperate desire to recover their money, Fermín and his motley crew of 'heroes' concoct a plan. Rodrigo infiltrates Manzi's office as a gardener, where he meets and becomes attracted to Florencia, Manzi's secretary. However, as they inch closer to their goal, they face unexpected hurdles. Florencia discovers Rodrigo's true identity, and a volatile Manzi threatens to unleash violence to protect his ill-gotten wealth. Fearing for his son's safety, Fermín considers abandoning their mission. But, will Rodrigo's determination and the collective dreams of a small town be enough to overcome the threats looming over them?
