Plot

Haunted by the dying words of her estranged father Joe, former prison guard, Samantha Woodhouse, a tenacious police detective, finds herself drawn back to her quaint hometown of Hellmington. The last breath of her ailing father carries the whispered name of Katie Owens, a figure from Samantha's past who vanished under mysterious circumstances shortly after their high school prom two decades ago. Katie, the daughter of Vic Owens, Joe's prison guard comrade, and Samantha barely moved in the same social spheres. Yet, the connection between them is irrefutable, marked by a tumultuous altercation at their prom, their last encounter. Vic, like his daughter, also disappeared without a trace, leaving a shroud of mystery that has hung over Hellmington for years. Samantha finds herself compelled to unravel this enigma, spurred by her father's cryptic final words. Katie's then-boyfriend, Brad Kovacs, was always under suspicion, yet he insists that Katie was consumed by her fascination with the occult, specifically a group called the Revenians. Journeying into the heart of the mystery, Samantha grapples with not only the chilling secrets of Hellmington but also the painful specters of her own history, including the tragic death of her own daughter, Ashley, in a fire. Her quest for the truth is a solitary one, with or without the approval of her sergeant uncle, Rupert Woodhouse. As she pieces together the puzzle of Katie's disappearance, Samantha is forced to confront not only the town's dark past but her own as well. The shadows of Hellmington beckon her, threatening to reveal truths that may be more terrifying than she ever imagined.
