In the nostalgic backdrop of 1959 San Francisco, four disparate souls - the tender-hearted telephone operator Penny Washington, the timid crooner Harrison Winslow, the feisty waitress Julia, and the opportunistic petty thief Milo Peck - embark on a journey that abruptly ends in a devastating bus accident. As fate would have it, the bus driver Hal, momentarily distracted, causes a lethal collision, stripping them of their lives. Simultaneously, a few miles away, Frank and Eva Reilly are rushing to the hospital for the birth of their son, Thomas. As Eva delivers Thomas in their car, an unexpected celestial intertwining occurs, binding the four lost souls to the newborn.
The spirits of Milo, Harrison, Penny and Julia find themselves invisibly tethered to Thomas, becoming his phantom guardians and ethereal companions. As Thomas grows, the quartet's presence begins to stir concern amongst those around him, causing them to retreat into invisibility, leaving a seven-year-old Thomas feeling inexplicably deserted.
Fast forward to two and a half decades later, Thomas is now a hardened businessman grappling with a fragile relationship with his girlfriend, Anne. Suddenly, the spectral quartet re-emerges, their reappearance heralded by Hal, who returns with his ghostly bus to usher them to the afterlife. Yet, Hal bears a revelation - the souls were given a chance to resolve their unresolved earthly matters, which was the purpose of their attachment to Thomas, but they remain unaware of this cosmic design.
Facing the ire of the spirits for his past transgressions, Hal manages to convince them to seek Thomas' help to complete their unfinished business. The task is daunting - retrieving stolen stamps for Milo, overcoming Harrison's stage fright, tracing Penny's estranged children from the 50s, and conveying Julia's regret to a former lover - and it threatens to shatter Thomas's already shaky relationship with Anne.
As Thomas embarks on a journey to help the restless spirits achieve closure, he not only confronts the spectral echoes of their pasts but also unravels his own hidden fears and desires. In this odyssey of redemption and self-discovery, both the living and the dead grapple with their unfinished lives, striving for closure and freedom, ultimately leading to the evolution of a better man in Thomas.
