Plot

Set in the turbulent 1920's Greece, under the shadow of Turkish occupation, He Who Must Die paints a stirring portrait of a nation in chaos. The epicenter of the tale is a humble Greek village that annually brings to life a passion play, a tradition steeped in faith and communal solidarity. Guided by the village Patriarch, the townsfolk select their neighbors to portray key biblical figures, leading to a tapestry of characters as rich as they are diverse. The village shepherd, a man with a stutter, is chosen to embody Jesus, while the covetous butcher, who coveted the role of Jesus, is cast as the traitorous Judas. The town's courtesan is appointed as Mary Magdalene, and the rest of the disciples are chosen from the local populace. As the passion play unfolds, reality and drama intertwine, blurring the lines between the stage and life itself. The tranquility of the village is shattered with the arrival of a group of war-torn, impoverished villagers lead by their priest. The affluent townsmen, unwilling to share their prosperity, orchestrate a devastating massacre. In the turmoil of the 1920's, each character's biblical role transcends the stage, manifesting itself in their real lives. He Who Must Die is a cinematic journey where the Passion Play becomes a mirror reflecting the villagers' existence, their struggles, and their ultimate redemption or downfall.
