Plot

In the vibrant yet austere landscape of 1960s West Texas, we meet twelve-year-old Ben, a boy left in the shadows of his parents' distractions. His mother, lost in the glamour of Hollywood, spends her days immersed in cinematic fantasies, while his father devotes his free time to the construction of a boat. Their quiet life takes a dramatic turn on a fateful night when a car crash outside their family diner leaves a girl named Cassie as the sole survivor, with a broken arm as her battle scar. As she heals under Ben's parents' care, an unexpected friendship blossoms between the two children. Cassie, with her mature outlook and adventurous spirit, convinces Ben to embark on a soul-searching journey to Baltimore, where her forward-thinking aunt and uncle reside. They traverse the heartlands of Arkansas, Kentucky, and Virginia, their shared experiences stitching together a tapestry of friendship and self-discovery. But as all adventures must, theirs, too, reaches an unforeseen climax in Virginia where Cassie succumbs to a mental breakdown. She's confined to the Mercy Psychiatric Ward, while Ben, in his unwavering loyalty, enlists at the North Carolina Military Academy to be near her. But Cassie's dreams stretch beyond the confines of their current predicament. With a resilient plan and Ben's unwavering commitment, they strive to turn their dreams into reality, painting a tale of hope, friendship, and resilience against life's unpredictability.
