Plot

In the unforgiving heart of the 15th-century Austrian Alps, a cloak of superstition weaves through the whispering wind. The land is a treacherous playground for the plague, with tales of malevolent spirits, pagans, and other outsiders dancing on the tongues of the fear-driven peasants. Among the ominous mountain forest, a young girl named Albrun and her mother live a modest life in a log-cabin farm, their existence marked by the suspicious glares of their neighbors. When Albrun's mother is stolen by death, the echoes of her spectral voice continue to haunt the young girl, amplifying her isolation and trauma. Time shifts forward two decades, revealing Albrun as a solitary mother, her life still tethered to the woodland farm and her newborn child. Shunned by the local priest and tormented by the villagers who label her an 'ugly witch', Albrun's world is steeped in a chilling solitude. Yet, an unexpected bond forms with a village woman whose intentions are not as benign as they seem, drawing Albrun into a chilling dance of sadomasochistic rituals. The struggle of Albrun, straddling the line between sanity and madness, serves as the heart of this dark legend. The narrative explores the blurred boundaries between ancient magic, faith, and insanity during a time when echoes of pagan beliefs stirred fear and dread among the rural populace. The final act uncovers an Albrun, broken and alienated, descending into a hallucinatory abyss of grotesque visions and cannibalistic horrors. In the end, "Hagazussa" is a chilling testament to one woman's battle against the darkness, both within and around her, in a time of widespread terror and superstition.
