Plot

In the heart of East Hampton, New York, nestled within the decaying grandeur of the long-standing family mansion, Grey Gardens, a peculiar narrative unfolds in 1973. Documentary filmmakers, the Maysles brothers, Albert and David, shift their lens from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to her eccentric aunt and older cousin. This captivating tale spotlights Edith Bouvier Beale - 'Big Edie' - and her daughter, 'Little Edie,' two Park Avenue debutantes who have exchanged their socialite past for a life of seclusion and squalor. Through a kaleidoscope of flashbacks dating back to 1936, the audience traces the unorthodox journey of this mother-daughter duo. Big Edie, viewing herself as a singer primarily, lives under the financial hold of her husband, Phelan Beale, who funds her singing lessons with the charming musician, Gould Strong. Their relationship, however, strikes more than just harmonious notes. Similarly, Little Edie's life is dictated by her parents, who wish for her to remain in the confines of Grey Gardens, snuffing out her dreams of a vibrant life in New York City as a professional dancer and actress. The story unfolds as Phelan and Big Edie's marriage crumbles, Little Edie's romance with Cap Krug in New York City faces a bitter end, Big Edie's health deteriorates, and the responsibility of her care falls heavily on Little Edie's shoulders. As their wealth and ties to the outside world diminish, so does their grasp on reality, and they find themselves trapped in their isolated existence, their lives slowly transformed over four decades. This intriguing narrative takes a dramatic turn when the health department raids their home, thrusting them back into the public eye through international tabloids. The gracious Jackie Onassis intervenes, aiming to salvage the remnants of her family's dignity. In an attempt to reclaim their lost glory and relive their past careers, Big and Little Edie agree to become the subjects of the Maysles brothers' documentary, illuminating their unusual lives in the labyrinth-like depths of Grey Gardens.
