Plot

In 1939, Gracie Fields, the nation's darling and 'Queen of Hearts', is perched upon the pinnacle of her fame as both a singer and actress. As she battles cervical cancer, the entire country fervently prays for her swift recovery. Despite her fragile health, the onset of World War Two sees her bravely lift spirits by singing for the troops, much to the consternation of her Italian-born husband, Monty Banks, a meticulous film director. As Italy enters the war, Monty faces potential internment, prompting Gracie's reluctant approval for him to flee to America. Meanwhile, she embarks on a fundraising tour across Canada, supporting the war effort. Yet, accusations of abandoning her homeland, the very country that crowned her a star, lead to her being jeered offstage. Undeterred, Gracie later serenades the battlefields, her voice a beacon of hope amidst the chaos. Post-war, her rendition of 'Take Me To Your Heart Again' at the London Palladium marks her return to the limelight, albeit never quite reaching her pre-war iconic status. Monty's death in 1950 leaves her a widow, and though her singing career continues to thrive, Gracie Fields never fully recaptures the nation's heart as she once did.
