Goodnight for Justice (2011)

In the heart of the late nineteenth century, the wild landscapes of the Wyoming Territory bear witness to the saga of John William Goodnight. As a child, he witnessed a brutal bandit attack on a stagecoach doubling as a covered wagon, an assault that claimed the lives of his farmer parents and everyone else on board, except for him and Rebecca Shaw, the wife of a judge who had just condemned the bandit's accomplice. Raised in the nurturing care of Rebecca, John grows into a Chicago lawyer who trusts the law but harbors a deep-seated aversion towards his own kind. Living on the edge, his reckless lifestyle should have already claimed his life, according to Rebecca, who recognizes the lingering torment of the little boy who saw his parents massacred. Eager to assuage John's restlessness, Rebecca arranges his appointment as a circuit court judge for the infamous Wyoming Territory, a place renowned for being the most lawless region on the continent. She believes that his quest for justice will never cease until the surviving bandit, who walks with a distinctive limp, faces the law. Guided by Rebecca's ethos, John embarks on his journey, determined to bring justice, not revenge, to this lawless frontier. As he traverses the rugged terrains of Wyoming, John relentlessly seeks the bandit responsible for his parents' demise, his path crossing with the once humble town of Dry Gulch, now ominously renamed Crooked Stick. The town is under the iron fist of Dan Reed, a man whose wealth has made him the de facto ruler, imposing his own ruthless law that serves his selfish interests, even if it means resorting to murder. John's suspicion grows that Dan is the face behind the limp of the bandit he has been hunting. Aided by a local widow, Dr. Kate Ramsey, who has managed to capture his heart, John races against time to gather proof, even as Dan and his men close in on them. Yet as he delves deeper, John is about to discover that in Crooked Stick, nothing is as straightforward as it seems.
