In the shimmering world of stage production, J.J. Hobart, an ambitious producer, is passionately preparing for his next big show. Unbeknownst to him, his partners have squandered the entire budget on a disastrous stock market gamble. Meanwhile, Rosmer Peek, a charming insurance salesman, finds himself drawn to the radiant ex-chorus girl, Joan Blondell. Her friend Genevieve, with an eye for opportunity, sets her sights on trapping one of Hobart's financially troubled partners. In a twist of fate, they devise a cunning plan to insure J.J. for a staggering $1 million, hoping to recoup their losses upon his death. Rosmer, smitten and unsuspecting, seals the deal with a policy.
