Plot

In the twilight of 1957, James Whale, the celebrated director of 1930s horror classics like "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein," finds himself on the periphery of a Hollywood community that once hailed him. Now retired and openly gay in an era steeped in prejudice, he relies on the enduring companionship of his former lover, David Lewis, and the staunch loyalty of his housekeeper, Hanna. Haunting the fading shadows of his glory days, Whale wrestles with the aftermath of a debilitating stroke. Though his physical health is fragile, his desires remain unscathed. He continues to be captivated by the allure of handsome young men, a fascination that agitates Hanna. Her concern stretches beyond the societal taboo to fear for his vulnerability against potential exploitation. Among the men who wander into Whale's life is Clayton Boone, an ex-Marine hailing from a harsh background, unwittingly hired by Hanna to maintain the lush gardens of the property. Unaware of Whale's illustrious past and sexual orientation, Boone is drawn into a complex friendship. Hanna's revelation of Whale's truth jolts Boone, threatening his own sense of masculinity and casting a shadow over his casual relationship with Betty, a savvy diner waitress. Balancing his friendship with Whale and his own insecurities, Boone finds himself intrigued by the former director's extraordinary life and fame. Meanwhile, Whale, prompted by the vulnerability of his health and the unexpected companionship, begins to introspect, reminiscing about significant moments from his past, including his service in WWI. This reflective journey ignites a bittersweet longing in Whale and leads him to make a decision that will forever alter his relationship with Boone. "Gods and Monsters" offers an intimate exploration of an iconic filmmaker's twilight years, a poignant tale of camaraderie, identity, and the haunting echoes of a past life.
