Plot

Lucy Harmon, a 19-year-old American girl and the daughter of the late poet Sara Harmon, embarks on a journey of self-discovery to Italy following her mother's suicide. She seeks solace in the warm embrace of a Tuscan villa owned by her mother's friends, Diana and her husband, Irish artist Ian. But Lucy's journey isn't solely to savor the Italian sun or to pose for a portrait by the masterful Ian. She carries with her the echoes of a youthful romance and the enigma of a diary filled with her mother's cryptic poems. Four years prior, Lucy was kissed by Nicolo Donati, an Italian boy who stirred in her a whirlwind of emotions. Now, she returns, eager to rekindle their connection and to unravel the mystery of her paternity. The diary suggests that Lucy's conception took place on this very hilltop, and her father could be any of the villa's frequent visitors. Is he the Italian war correspondent who penned heartfelt letters to Sara for two decades? Could he be the terminally ill English playwright residing at the villa, or the sculptor who breathes life into the local trees with his chainsaw? None of them realize that their past may be intertwined with Lucy's quest. Meanwhile, Lucy's untouched innocence piques the curiosity of the villa's occupants, including Diana's daughter Miranda and her American boyfriend Richard. As Lucy inches closer to the truth, her journey becomes a profound exploration of love, loss, and the complexities of her own identity. Amid the Italian hills, Lucy seeks to understand her past, embrace her present, and shape her future, illustrating a captivating tale of youthful courage and the relentless pursuit of self.
