Gabriela (1983)

Set against the backdrop of a small coastal town in Brazil, circa 1925, Nacib (Marcello Mastroianni), a bar owner under the influence of the town's traditional colonels, crosses paths with the beguiling Gabriela (Sonia Braga). He hires her as a cook, but soon finds himself entangled in a tempestuous love affair, spellbound by her raw sensuality. However, Gabriela's allure also attracts unwanted attention, prompting a disgruntled Nacib to propose marriage under the counsel of his confidant, Tonico (Cantafora), in an attempt to extinguish the unwelcome flames of envy. In their married life, Nacib insists on Gabriela adopting a more modest demeanour to elevate their social standing. Yet, Gabriela's free spirit refuses to be tamed, leading her into Tonico's arms and compelling a heartbroken Nacib to annul their marriage. As the narrative unfolds, both Nacib and the town experience a transformative journey, leading to a rekindling of Nacib and Gabriela's complicated relationship. With the town's political landscape shifting towards modernity, Gabriela returns, not as Nacib's wife, but his mistress, offering a tantalizing glimpse into their unconventional love story.
