Dick Harper, a high-flying executive engineer, paves his path at Taft Aerospace with dedication and ambition. His wife, the vivacious and charming Jane Harper, shares an equally opulent lifestyle. Their world is adorned with luxuries, including a newly constructed swimming pool that marks the pinnacle of their societal stature. However, their life of comfort shatters when Dick is abruptly terminated by the company's president, Charlie Blanchard, leaving them drowned in a sea of debts, including a staggering $70,000 mortgage on their house. Trying to maintain a façade of normalcy, they desperately cut corners to meet ends while hidden from their neighbors' prying eyes. The unemployment paycheck, their only lifeline, proves insufficient to keep them afloat in their sea of debts. Dick's frantic job hunt yields no results, driving him to the brink of despair. Meanwhile, Jane, previously a homemaker, steps out of her comfort zone to explore job opportunities, reducing their expenses to a bare minimum. The Harpers' life takes an unexpected turn when they find themselves in the midst of a bank heist while securing a loan. In a twist of fate, Jane manages to pilfer some money from the thieves. This sparks an idea as they grapple with the harsh reality of their financial predicament. With their social status at stake and desperation gnawing at them, they embark on a daring path - thievery.
