Friends and Lovers (1931)

In the heart of Britain, Captain Geoff Roberts, a dedicated army man, falls prey to the intoxicating allure of Alva, the enchanting wife of the malevolent Victor Sangrito. Unbeknownst to Geoff, Sangrito is privy to their secret liaison, cunningly using his bewitching wife as bait to entrap men, only to extort them later, putting their reputations at stake. Finding himself ensnared in Sangrito's devious scheme, Geoff, with a heavy heart, accedes to the blackmail, relinquishing his passionate affair with Alva. He leaves for the exotic landscapes of India, embittered by the woman he once profoundly loved, now assuming her to be his treacherous betrayer. In the vibrant and tumultuous setting of India, Geoff is joined by his youthful companion, Lieutenant Ned Nichols, who carries a torch for the same captivating woman back in England. Their friendship teeters on the brink of rupture as they grapple with their shared affection for Alva. However, they soon come to a startling realization; Alva's duplicity has ensnared them both. United by this revelation, their bond of camaraderie triumphs over their misguided affections for the dishonest woman. However, the narrative takes a dramatic turn when circumstances bring the two friends back to their homeland, where they cross paths with Alva once again. Confronted with her unexpected presence, they are plunged into a whirlpool of questions, as they grapple with the possibility that Alva might not be the treacherous seductress they had presumed her to be.
