Fragment of Fear (1970)

British author and former heroin addict, Tim Brett (David Hemmings), enjoys a taste of sobriety and success. Having put his drug-addled past behind him with the help of his affluent, widowed aunt, he pens a best-selling autobiography that thrusts him into the limelight. Basking in his newfound fame, he embarks on a serene vacation in Italy with his aunt, anticipating his upcoming nuptials to his beloved, Juliet Bristow (Gayle Hunnicutt). However, tranquility is short-lived as his aunt is chillingly murdered, throwing Tim into a labyrinth of uncertainty and danger. The Italian Police are left scratching their heads, attributing the crime to a random thief. Unconvinced, Tim finds himself drawn into a sinister web upon his return to England, unearthing unsettling clues pointing towards a potential conspiracy. His once safe haven, his flat, is violated and ransacked. The very people meant to protect him, the Police, become agents of his harassment, their badges proving to be as authentic as illusions. A cryptic gentleman claiming to be from British Intelligence enters the scene, shadowing Tim and raising the question: Was his aunt enmeshed in a grand criminal enterprise unknown to him? As he grapples with this dystopian reality, his life is further fractured by threats of violence, enigmatic messages, and lethal phone calls that threaten to shatter his sanity. Yet, the people closest to him, including the Police and Juliet, are skeptical of his claims, their trust eroded by his past as an addict. In a world where friends morph into foes and protectors into tormentors, Tim is left questioning his own sanity. Is his life truly in danger or is he spiraling back into the abyss of his former addiction?
