Filth and Wisdom (2008)

In the bustling heart of London, a Ukrainian Gypsy named A.K. pursues his dreams of rock stardom amidst a scattered array of odd jobs. His daily living is a curious cocktail of playing a dom, driving a taxi, and assisting his self-pitiful, blind poet neighbour. Sharing his living space are Holly, a ballerina forced to shed her innocence in the harsh world of stripping, needing guidance in this unfamiliar terrain, and Juliette, a disillusioned pharmacy assistant grappling with a pill addiction, working under an Indian boss who yearns for more than his mundane married life. Juliette, disconnected from her own family, harbours dreams of bringing relief to Africa's impoverished children. Amidst this tangled web of aspirations and disillusions, A.K. nurses a deep, unexpressed affection for Holly, while Juliette's boss harbours unrequited desires for her. Their lives are punctuated by the sporadic, distressed calls from Juliette's unfortunate sister and the despairing laments of the blind poet. In this gritty portrait of life, the question lingers - is there a pathway leading from the squalor of their existence to the enlightenment of wisdom?
