Plot

Sixteen-year-old Finn Earl, an urbanite shackled to his mother’s Lower East Side apartment in New York City, yearns for an exotic summer escape. His dream is to voyage to South America to study the Ishkanani tribe, known as the 'Fierce People,' alongside his absentee anthropologist father. However, his ambitions are thwarted when he is apprehended amidst a desperate attempt to rescue his mother, Liz, from her escalating drug dependency. Liz, a Swedish massage trained therapist, has dipped into the murky world of illicit work to satiate her sexual cravings and support her cocaine and alcohol addiction. Recognizing the urgency to reform her life for Finn's sake, she cleverly manipulates her most adoring non-sexual client, Ogden C. Osborne, the country's seventh wealthiest man, to secure a role as his personal therapist. Consequently, Finn and Liz find themselves transplanted from the grimy streets of New York to the sprawling, ten square mile estate of Osborne in Vlyvalle, New Jersey. Despite his initial reservations, Finn decides to treat this unexpected sojourn like an anthropological study, immersing himself in the lavish world of America's super-rich. As Finn navigates this labyrinth of privilege and power, he forges bonds with Osborne's kin, including his beautiful granddaughter, Maya, and her charismatic older brother, Bryce. He also meets an array of intriguing characters, from the estate's staff to Osborne's rich neighbors and colleagues. Meanwhile, Liz grapples with her addictions, fighting to regain her son's lost trust and love. However, as Finn ascends in the Osborne clan's hierarchy, a shocking act of violence shatters his newfound status, revealing a side of this tribe more menacing than the 'Fierce People' he had yearned to study. Finn and Liz, caught in a perilous battle for their dignity, soon realize that membership in this opulent world comes at a steep cost...
