Plot
Caught in the icy grip of an insidious writer's block, Joe, an LA-based children's book author and illustrator, finds himself at a creative impasse in his second year of struggle. The mounting frustration of his girlfriend over his artistic stagnation sours their relationship, prompting Joe to sever ties. Seeking a change of scenery, he embarks on an unlikely journey with his ex-girlfriend's brother to a quaint Wisconsin town, where brave souls partake in a chilling Christmas tradition - a frigid leap into the icy waters of Lake Michigan.
Their temporary refuge is a secluded house nestled in the heart of nowhere. When his friend lands in the hospital, victim to a feisty badger, Joe is left to navigate this unfamiliar terrain alone. In his solitude, he crosses paths with a reclusive local and forms an unexpected friendship. A spark ignites as he becomes enamored with the hermit's vibrant granddaughter, stirring up a whirlwind of emotions.
But, life in this sleepy town isn't as tranquil as it appears. The local sheriff, a man with a keen distaste for outsiders and a protective father to the girl Joe is falling for, is armed and suspicious. As Christmas looms, tensions rise and complexities unravel, leaving Joe to navigate this intricate maze of small-town dynamics, blossoming romance, and his own creative awakening.
