Plot

In the frigid heart of Québec, Philippe Roberge, a philosophically inclined forty-year-old, finds himself adrift in the sea of life. His existence is marked by a persistent sense that he is unheard and overlooked. Having twice failed his Ph.D. dissertation on the theory that man's interest in outer space stems from innate narcissism, he is reduced to peddling newspaper subscriptions to keep his life afloat. His personal connections are tenuous at best, a polite but distant relationship with his ex-wife and a frosty rapport with his polar opposite, a younger gay brother, André. Philippe's world is shaken by the recent passing of his mother, who he cared for devotedly in her twilight years. The echoes of her loss reverberate through his life, pushing him to reassess his existence and his dissertation beliefs. His introspection is further stirred by three pivotal occurrences: an unexpected invitation to a significant Russian conference by a cosmonaut he deeply admires, an opportunity to participate in a contest focused on transmitting messages into the cosmic void, and the uncovering of unsettling truths about his mother's demise. Simultaneously, Philippe embarks on a unique video project about life, intending to submit it to an extraterrestrial outreach initiative affiliated with Cornell University. This journey of self-rediscovery and exploration is symbolized by a sudden invitation to undertake a long voyage - a metaphor for Philippe's own expedition into the uncharted territories of his life. As he navigates these waters, he grapples with the mysteries of space, self-knowledge, and the human capacity for discovery. Far Side of the Moon paints a vivid portrait of a man caught in the interplay of earthly struggles and celestial fascination, evocatively exploring the voyage of life itself.
