Plot

In the twilight of his directorial career, Luc Bondy crafts a dazzling cinematic mosaic, merging the charm of the 18th-century play by Pierre de Marivaux with the vibrancy of 21st-century Paris. At the heart of this intriguing narrative is the enigmatic Araminte, a wealthy widow portrayed with commanding elegance by Isabelle Huppert. Unbeknownst to her, Araminte hires Dorante, a man besotted with her, as her accountant. Louis Garrel brings to life Dorante, a character teetering on the edge of pathos and prowess, navigating a complex social labyrinth to kindle a similar affection in Araminte. As the plot unravels, Dorante and Dubois, Araminte's shrewd manservant played by Yves Jacques, weave a web of deceit and manipulation. They not only play on the innocence of Araminte but also exploit her confidante, Marton, brought to life by Manon Combes. Amidst this intricate dance of deception, Bulle Ogier shines as Araminte's discerning mother, suspicious of Dorante's motives yet eager to match her daughter with an elderly, financially struggling Count, a role deftly portrayed by Jean-Pierre Malo. Filmed partially at the historic Théâtre de l'Odéon, in the revealing light of day while the same cast performed the play under the cloak of night, the film blurs the boundaries between the stage and the cinematic world. It offers an innovative spin on this timeless exploration of love's intricate psychology, making it a captivating watch for audiences.
