In the austere halls of Wittering College, England, a respected teacher, Robert Anderson, finds his world fractured when a violent encounter with a student leaves him nursing a bruised face and a shattered psyche. Forced into a three-month sabbatical to dodge a potential lawsuit from the student's parents, Robert spirals into a haze of alcoholism and emotional turmoil, his personal life unravelling in tandem. Separation from his wife Helen casts a gloomy shadow over his existence, while their daughter Kate, a student at the same school, grows estranged, her respect for her father dwindling with each passing day. Ruth Gemmell portrays the stern college principal, Sarah Balham, who harbors a bitter loathing for Robert, yet is hamstrung by union rules from ousting him. Haunted by news of violence in another school, Robert's fraying nerves trigger a memo warning his colleagues of similar threats, only to be met with dismissive conjectures of paranoia and delusion. However, as twilight descends on the school one fateful evening, Robert observes uncanny movements on the outskirts of the campus. His warnings fall on the deaf ears of the security guard James, who dismisses Robert's concerns with casual indifference. Yet, as the eerie stillness of the night shatters and the school finds itself besieged by a ruthless gang of hooligans, Robert's worst fears come to life. A desperate race against time ensues, as he must navigate the chaos to find and protect his daughter Kate.
