In the heart of France's flourishing wine country lies Bellenac, a realm presided over by the de Montfaucon family for countless generations. Marquis Philippe de Montfaucon, portrayed by David Niven, is the latest in this lineage. When a crisis threatens the vineyards, Philippe leaves his Parisian home and ventures back to his ancestral estate, despite his inner turmoil. His wife, Marquise Catherine de Montfaucon, played by Deborah Kerr, defies Philippe's wishes and journeys to Bellenac with their two adolescent children, Jacques and Antoinette. Upon arrival, Catherine discovers the puzzling behavior of Christian and Odile de Caray, another long-standing family in the region. Christian, armed perpetually with a bow and arrow, exhibits a chilling indifference to life, demonstrated when he kills a dove in cold blood. Odile possesses a hypnotic allure that seems to ensnare anyone within her gaze. But the most alarming mystery of all is Philippe's transformation. Once a robust figure, Philippe has become a mere shadow of his former self, seeming to be entrapped in a trance. Despite the ominous atmosphere and the imminent danger to her family, Catherine resolves to uncover the truth.
