Plot

In the plaintive tableau of life, we meet Emile, a man who traded his rustic Saskatchewan farm beginnings for the academic allure of Britain. His younger, more sensitive brother Freddy, teeming with untapped potential, was left behind, tethered to their older, domineering brother Carl and the demanding farm life. This decision, though driven by necessity, left a fissure in the family fabric that time couldn't mend. Now, as the twilight of Emile's life begins to cast long shadows, he finds himself journeying to Victoria, Canada, not only to accept an honorary degree but also to confront the ghosts of his past. Emile's last remaining ties to his family lie with his late brother Carl’s grown daughter Nadia and her young daughter Maria, who know him mostly as a whispered name. His sudden presence in their lives, initially perceived as a mere convenience for a free bed, stirs up dormant memories and unresolved emotions. As Nadia grapples with the aftermath of a painful breakup and subsequent relocation from Vancouver, Emile tentatively reaches out, hoping to bridge the distance that years and untold stories have built. Renowned for its harmonious blend of cinéma vérité and magic realism, the movie takes us on a poignant exploration of Emile's life. He finds himself caught in the crosshairs of past and present, his memories as vivid and haunting as the realities unfolding before his eyes. As he tries to weave himself back into the tapestry of his family, he is compelled to face the anxieties lurking in his recollections and the family he once left behind. Emile's journey becomes a testament to the human capacity for change and connection, as he grapples with the final chapters of his mental autobiography. Will he be able to reclaim his role as an uncle and great-uncle, embraced by the warmth of family, or will he retreat into the labyrinth of his past, a place filled with lost chances and lingering regrets? As Emile stands on the precipice of choice, the movie paints an evocative portrait of life's complexities and the powerful pull of family ties.
