Plot

In the aftermath of World War II, Ruth (Dame Elizabeth Taylor), a captivating English rose, is swept off her feet in a whirlwind romance by dashing colonial tea planter, John Wiley (Peter Finch). Uprooting her English life, Ruth is whisked away to the exotic heart of Ceylon, to her new home, Elephant Walk. This grand plantation, nestled amidst tropical lushness and named for its unique location on the elephants' path to water, emanates a blend of wealth, luxury, and the looming presence of the local elephants, who bear a longstanding grudge against the place. Ruth soon finds herself isolated, the only European woman amidst a sea of bachelors and tea planters, her joy shadowed by the overwhelming veneration of her husband's late father. His legacy, the mighty Elephant Walk, is adored by locals and Europeans alike, a constant reminder of the great founder who dared to build in the path of the elephants. This adulation even shadows her marriage, coupled with John's occasional imperious arrogance, leaving Ruth feeling alone and out of place. However, Ruth finds an unexpected ally in the pragmatic Dick Carver (Dana Andrews), the plantation manager who has never subscribed to the myth of the great founder. As John immerses himself in the demanding work of the plantation, Ruth and Dick's mutual attraction starts to blossom, adding a layer of complexity to her already complicated life. Their growing intimacy, however, is threatened as nature retaliates, a drought and a subsequent cholera epidemic looming ominously. As the crisis unfolds, it becomes a defining force, deciding the course of their lives and the fate of Elephant Walk.
