Plot

In the throes of World War II, Romek, a precocious 12-year-old Jewish boy from the city, is given a swift initiation into Catholicism by his desperate father. This is a bid to save Romek from the grim fate of deportation, possibly to Auschwitz, by disguising him as a Catholic and sending him to the countryside. He finds refuge with the simple, unsuspecting family of Gniecio, camouflaged as a city-dwelling relative. The dynamics within the family are complex, with the domineering Vladek, Gniecio's elder son, and the naive Tollo, the younger son, who immerses himself in a religious role-play, ambitiously attempting to embody Jesus, even practicing crucifixion on a tree. The boys' interactions are further complicated by their single playmate, Maria, who becomes an unexpected ally for Romek when a misunderstanding leads to his expulsion from his adopted home. Meanwhile, the harsh realities of war seep into their pastoral hideaway. The execution of their neighbors, the Batylins, for harboring a forbidden pig, brings the war's brutality to their doorstep. Further turmoil ensues when Gniecio's attempts to sell his pig in the city are sabotaged by the scheming Kluba. As the boys navigate the intricacies of their world, war's grim specter rears its head once more, bringing with it a torrent of unimaginable consequences. This poignant tale explores the innocence of youth amidst the callousness of war, the intricacies of survival, and the unexpected bonds that emerge in times of adversity.
