Plot

In the monotonous folds of suburbia, Steven Schoichet, a near thirty-year-old, still nests in his childhood home. His life, a symphony of monotony, is a ceaseless cycle of family squabbles, a dead-end job, and the insipid familiarity of his hometown. However, a flicker of ambition sparks within him when he stumbles upon an old Edgar Bergen movie. Inspired, Steven dares to dream and chooses the unconventional path of ventriloquism. His aspirations, though dismissed by his family, find support in his eccentric neighbor, Fangora. A punk-rock enthusiast, Fangora dreams of her own stardom and becomes Steven's comrade in their shared pursuit of the extraordinary. With the loss of his job, Steven's life takes an unexpected turn. He develops a fondness for Lorena, his attractive unemployment counselor. Despite a restraining order, a result of his overzealous gratitude painted on her door, Lorena, a single mother, ventures into a relationship with Steven. His bickering family and lack of experience with women, however, pose challenges to their budding romance. Meanwhile, Steven's sister Heidi, a wedding planner nursing the wounds of a broken engagement, navigates through an emotional labyrinth as her ex-fiancé, a volatile accountant, continues to disrupt her life. In the midst of these intertwining tales, the wedding of a Jewish girl seeking traditional Klezmer music transpires into an unexpected catalyst, steering the lives of all involved towards a pivotal turning point. Through the efforts of Steven and his wooden sidekick, life begins to dance to a different tune. Restraining orders give way to new love, rock bands dabble in Yiddish, and in the backdrop of someone else's wedding, everything begins to harmoniously click into place. In this charming tale of pursuit, passion, and puppetry, we witness the magic that unfolds when a dreamer dares to dream.
