In the fading gold-rush town of Crown City, Colorado, hope dwindles as swiftly as the golden veins that once promised prosperity. The only gold left is a tantalising glimmer across the river, nestled within the sacred grounds of the Ute Indians. A complex web of tensions simmers beneath the surface of the town, where resident Sam Brannon and Ute leader Chief Ouray strive to maintain a fragile peace, their efforts challenged by the swirling undercurrents of prejudice and desperation. Sam's son Gary, hardened by the loss of his mother to a drunken Ute brave, harbors a corrosive hatred for the Utes.
