Plot

In the heart of a traditional Chinese family, Jade Li, a vibrant 22-year-old Chinese-Canadian, finds herself caught on a tightrope between cultural expectations and her heart's calling. Her family, driven by a desire to uphold their image and "save face," dreams of financial prosperity through penny stocks, an ambition her father fervently holds. Yet this vision is worlds apart from Jade's own aspiration to illuminate the stage as an actress, a dream her family neither understands nor publicly endorses. The family's portrait of an ideal life for Jade is completed with a suitable Chinese suitor. Andrew, the chosen one, is persistently introduced to Jade by her extended family, who are unaware of her yearning for more Western sensibilities. Jade finds herself agreeing to date Andrew, yet her heart beats to a different rhythm. Her attraction lies with Mark, a slightly awkward but endearing Caucasian English graduate student. Double Happiness encapsulates Jade's quest for balance; a harmonious blend of satisfying her parents' wishes while staying true to herself. As Mark enters her life, the carefully constructed facade of the perfect Chinese daughter begins to crumble. Jade is challenged to navigate the tumultuous waters of cultural expectations and personal desires, a journey that promises to be anything but simple. In the pursuit of her own "double happiness," Jade must grapple with the reality that something's got to give.
