Walter Richmond, a high-ranking American pharmaceutical executive, embarks on a business venture to Amsterdam, joined by his wife Cathryn and their 10-year-old daughter Melissa. The young girl has been voiceless since a tragic accident, relying on a magic marker board draped around her neck for communication. During their stay at the illustrious De L'Europe hotel, Melissa inadvertently becomes separated from her parents. Venturing into the labyrinthine streets of Amsterdam, she becomes an unexpected witness to the murder of Simon Van Der Molen, the legal counsel for Walter's Dutch client. The murderers, the remorseless hitman Bruno Decker and his employer, Rudolph Hartman, who happens to be Walter’s client, spot Melissa. The pair had orchestrated Van Der Molen's death to conceal the harmful side effects of Hartman's new drug, a secret that could jeopardize its lucrative deal with Walter’s firm. Finding temporary sanctuary with a homeless man named Simon, Melissa ingeniously evades Hartman by commandeering a police car. The joyride ends abruptly when she crashes into a bistro, a consequence of her lack of driving experience. Reunited with her parents at the hotel, her father unwittingly discloses Melissa's ordeal to Hartman, setting off a deadly chain of events. Decker relentlessly pursues Melissa, a tense chase that leads from her room, down an elevator shaft, and into the suite of the notorious rock star, Billy Boy Manson. When Manson attempts to sexually assault Melissa, Decker intervenes, killing him in the process. Melissa eludes the chaos, slipping out a window and onto a ledge, before finally escaping through another window after a brief, heart-stopping altercation in an exercise room. Once back in the care of her frantic parents and the local police, Melissa is transported by ambulance to a hospital. However, the danger is far from over. After Decker's demise, Hartman hijacks the ambulance, driving away with Melissa. Walter and the police are now in a desperate race against time to save Melissa before she can expose Hartman and Decker as Van Der Molen's killers.
