Plot

In the heart of the vibrant 1960s, American couple Mike (Rod Taylor) and Janet Harper (Doris Day) find themselves uprooted from their native land, transplanted to the English countryside for Mike's booming wool textiles and fashion business. Despite Mike's longing for the hustle and bustle of central London, Janet, a soul more at ease in tranquility than chaos, secures them a quaint house nestled thirty miles away in the serene embrace of Kent. This rural choice sends Mike on a daily commute, often leading him to opt for overnight stays in one of the company's city flats. This arrangement, though practical, seeds a sense of neglect in Janet's heart, a sentiment that soon sprouts into suspicion. As the distance between them grows, Janet's fears find fertile ground in the insinuations of their gossipy landlady, Vanessa Courtwright (Hermione Baddeley), and in the ever-present charm of Mike's secretary-turned-assistant, Claire Hackett (Maura McGiveney). The mounting suspicion that Mike might be straying leads Janet to consider a countermove, a game of pretense or perhaps reality, a tit-for-tat strategy to combat potential infidelity. The arrival of the suave Frenchman, Paul Bellari (Sergio Fantoni), an antiques dealer and decorator hired by Janet, adds an unexpected twist to the tale. As Claire and Paul weave their way into the Harpers' lives, they are thrust into a series of compromising situations that could shatter the fabric of the Harpers' marriage. As suspicions escalate, the line between pretense and reality blurs, forming a captivating tableau of intrigue and romantic entanglement. Amidst the backdrop of wool and antiques, the Harpers' love story is tested in an intricate dance of trust, betrayal, and the ever-looming question - to cheat or not to cheat?
