Plot

In the heart of middle-class America, Richard and Barbara Harmon find their 17-year-long marriage hitting an unforgiving rocky terrain. Both hailing from working-class backgrounds, they have two teenage children and a seemingly unbridgeable chasm of misunderstandings between them. Richard, now a business success after years of relentless striving, is perplexed by Barbara's discontent. He views himself as the hardworking provider, yet Barbara yearns for emotional connection, feeling abandoned in the shadow of Richard's professional triumphs. Their marital drought extends to their bedroom, challenging their fidelity - a territory previously unexplored. As they grapple with advice from well-meaning friends, they inadvertently stoke the embers of divorce, an idea that had been a stranger to their union until now. The real conundrum arises as they confront the possibility of a future without each other. Adding to this intricate web is the divorced duo, Nelson and Nancy Downes. Nelson, desperately seeking to escape the burden of alimony, schemes to find a new husband for Nancy. Lonely yet pragmatic, Nancy desires remarriage but is unwilling to settle for anything less than economic stability. Richard seems to be the perfect answer to her romantic aspirations, if only he weren't entangled in potential alimony payments to Barbara. Thus, Nelson and Nancy embark on a quest to find a new partner for Barbara, further complicating the already tumultuous situation. As the Harmon's marriage disintegrates, they find themselves in the company of new acquaintances, only to reunite in a night club. Amid the flashing lights and intoxicating music, they are confronted with a startling revelation - their flawed marriage may be more appealing than their neatly packaged divorce. Their journey uncovers the bitter truth that predictability can breed contempt, but it can also bring comfort - a paradox that lies at the heart of "Divorce American Style".
