Plot

In the tranquil yet desolate countryside, a secluded motel is the backdrop for the unconventional lives of Harriet, her wayward sister Gwen, and their alcoholic mother. The motel, a symbol of isolation and stagnancy, is not only their home but also a constant reminder of Harriet's longing for escape. Fueled by boundless creativity and a desire for companionship, the young, imaginative Harriet envisions far-fetched escapes such as digging her way to China or departing on a UFO. This monotonous life is disrupted when a car breaks down near the motel, and its occupants, Ricky and his ailing mother Leah, take a room. Ricky, an intellectually disabled man, and his mother, weakened by the ravages of cancer, were journeying to a home where Ricky would be cared for after Leah's inevitable departure from this world. The arrival of Ricky, a kindred spirit, sparks a profound connection with Harriet. They find solace in each other's company, their friendship rooted in their shared longing for a different life and their unique perspectives. As Harriet grapples with her mother's sudden demise, Ricky's steadfast companionship becomes her lifeline. In the face of her own grief, she strives to help Ricky navigate his differences and the daunting prospect of solitary existence after his mother's imminent death. Their relationship, though misunderstood by Gwen who attempts to separate them, is their sanctuary, their haven amidst the chaos of life's cruel twists. As these two lonely souls cling to each other, their bond deepens, becoming a beacon of hope and resilience in their turbulent world. Through their shared dreams and heartbreaks, Harriet and Ricky learn to navigate their stark realities, their friendship a testament to the power of connection in a world that often fails to understand their unique brilliance.
