Devil's Doorway (1950)

In the midst of the American frontier, decorated war hero and Shoshone Indian, Lance Poole, returns home to the sprawling plains of Wyoming Territory from the Civil War. His chest is adorned with the Medal of Honor, a testament to his bravery at Gettysburg, and his heart is filled with dreams of peaceful cattle ranching on his ancestral lands. Despite the poverty of the reservation, the Poole family has toiled and nurtured their land into prosperity, retaining their traditional ways and earning the respect of locals. However, Lance's homecoming ushers in a stark realization. The winds of change have blown through his homeland, carrying with them anti-Indian legislation that threatens to uproot his family. Settlers, farmers, and ranchers, lured by the fertile grass range, are now legally entitled to stake their claim on Poole's land, leaving the indomitable war hero and his family on the brink of displacement. In this time of adversity, Lance's only hope lies in the hands of the regional lawyers. But with the openly bigoted Verne Coolan refusing to lend his legal expertise to any Shoshone, Lance is left with no choice but to turn to Orrie Masters. His initial shock at discovering that "A. Masters" is a woman gives way to a desperate plea for assistance. The partnership, fraught with their mutual prejudices, becomes a crucible where both Orrie and Lance must confront their biases. As they navigate this legal battlefield, Orrie must reconcile her pledge to uphold the law with her compassion for the Pooles and their fight for justice. Meanwhile, Coolan becomes hell-bent on crushing Lance, intending to use him as a sacrificial lamb to spark a devastating range war. In the face of this impending catastrophe, Lance must use all his courage and wisdom to protect his family and his heritage from the clutches of prejudice and exploitation.
