Plot

In the simmering heart of Detroit during the early 1970s, a political fundraiser for a promising black Congressman, Aubrey Hale Clayton, becomes the setting of a daring heist. The event, filled with affluent black supporters, is thrown into chaos as masked assailants storm in, demanding the fundraiser's collective wealth. An estimated $400,000 worth of gold, jewels, and cash vanish into thin air, as the criminals make their escape in a nondescript white van, leaving the police with no leads and a city rife with speculation. The crime, oozing with racial and political undertones, becomes a hotbed of controversy. Some see the hand of white saboteurs, aiming to derail the election efforts of a black candidate, while others point to a black-on-black crime. The Detroit Police Department, wary of stoking racial tension, navigates the delicate situation with caution. In an effort to crack the case, two officers are assigned: Lieutenant Danny Bassett, a white cop, and Sergeant Jesse Williams, a black cop. Despite the boiling political pressure, they form an effective duo, slowly piecing together a trail. Unfortunately, their potential witnesses meet untimely ends before they can provide any valuable information. As the investigation deepens, they uncover a web of criminal intrigue involving a high-priced black call girl, Roby Harris, her pimp-lover, Ferdy Sloan, and a mutilated body of a fence for stolen goods, a Native-American known as Indian Tom. Their pursuit of justice ultimately leads them to a desolate church, surrounded by forsaken buildings, including an old railroad station. It is here that the detectives and the police forces face off against the robbers in a climactic showdown. "Detroit 9000" is a compelling blend of police procedural and political drama, set against the backdrop of a city grappling with racial tension and power struggles. With each twist and turn, the film draws the viewer deeper into the gritty underbelly of 1970s Detroit, a city on the edge.
