Set against the chilling backdrop of the White Terror martial law era in 1962 Taiwan, the story of "Detention" unfolds. The narrative plunges into the heart-wrenching saga of Fang Ray Shin, a female student at the secluded Greenwood High School, whose life descends into tragic chaos following a forbidden act. Engulfed in the throes of a clandestine love with her counselor, the enigmatic Mr. Chang, Fang finds herself embroiled in a perilous world of illicit knowledge and suppressed speech. Together with the courageous Miss Yin and the bold Wei Chong Ting, they form a covert study group dedicated to the exploration of banned books, an act of defiance that dares to challenge the oppressive system. However, the club's existence is inadvertently exposed by a heartbroken Fang, triggering a horrifying chain of events that see her teachers and schoolmates subjected to brutal torture and execution. This fictional tragedy becomes a symbol of the peak of Taiwan's harrowing white terror era. Haunted by the ghosts of her past and burdened by guilt, Fang embarks on a journey of redemption. Her quest leads her to confront her past sins, navigate a labyrinth of regret, and most importantly, aid the sole survivor of the book club in escaping from a relentless nightmare.
