Ephraim Cabot, a man brimming with life despite his advancing years, harbors an insatiable love for his New England farm. His sons, products of two wives whom he drove to premature graves, share his voracious greed, but also a resentful hatred towards him. The embittered Eben, whose mother was the farm's original owner, believes he is the rightful heir. The plot thickens when Ephraim introduces Anna, his new wife, into the mix.
