In the bustling heart of Tokyo, Daigo Kobayashi's life reverberates with the harmonious echoes of his cello as part of an orchestra. However, when the orchestra dissolves, he finds himself adrift in a sea of uncertainty. Not skilled enough to secure another position in the city's competitive musical arena, he decides to retreat to the nostalgic tranquility of his boyhood home, nestled in the shadow of the majestic Mt. Fuji. His wife Mika, a beacon of optimism, supports his decision, and they embark on this journey together. Their life takes an unexpected turn when Daigo responds to a classified ad marked "Departures," led to believe it's for a travel agency. Instead, he finds himself plunged into the world of "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a funeral professional who prepares the departed for their final journey. His mother has passed, his father had abandoned them when he was a child, and now Daigo is entrusted with guiding others' loved ones into the afterlife. In the face of societal disdain for this 'unclean' profession, Daigo discovers an unexpected sense of purpose and dignity within the solemn rituals. Under the quiet yet compelling guidance of his boss, Sasaki, he not only perfects the art of "Nokanshi" but also uncovers a profound understanding of life and death.
