Plot

When an honest foundry worker, François, is driven by rage to commit an unthinkable crime, his life becomes a claustrophobic tale of regret and reflection, teetering on the brink of despair. In the aftermath of fatally shooting the unprincipled vaudeville dog trainer, Valentin, François confines himself to his cramped apartment, a humble abode nestled atop a narrow six-storey building. As the police close in, he is trapped not only physically, but also within the labyrinth of his own memories. His heart is a battlefield of tormenting guilt and lost love as he delves into his past, reliving the events that led to this fateful night. His thoughts weave a tale of three interconnected episodes, each a piece of the intricate puzzle that is his life. François recalls his tender romance with Françoise, the delicate florist, a love story tarnished by Valentin's manipulative interference. The narrative becomes further complicated as he also remembers Clara, Valentin's former assistant, and the complicated entanglement they shared. Through this sleepless night painted with remorse and longing, François seeks redemption, his only hope being the first ray of daybreak. Will the dawn bring absolution for this working-class hero, or will it merely illuminate the magnitude of his fall from grace? The answers lie within the unfolding story of Daybreak (1939), a journey into the heart of a man pushed beyond his limits.
