It's the 1970s, and modern forensics tools are still being developed. That means that a serial killer as clever as Jack have the flexibility to remain anonymous. That's one reason why Jack manages to continue his killings for a dozen years. Were Jack to kill rationally, he'd likely never get caught — but he's going to increasingly greater risks for the sake of creating his vision of art. The polices are starting to close in on Jack, and he seems to recognize that his discovery is inevitable. But will he be able to complete his masterpiece before his spree of terror is finally stopped?
