Plot
In the radiant spotlight of the 1970s rock scene, Danny Collins (Al Pacino) has danced with fame and fortune, but his hard-living ways have taken a toll. This aging rocker, stuck in a cycle of excess and old habits, is jolted from his destructive path when his astute manager, Frank Grubman (Christopher Plummer) stumbles upon a 40-year-old undelivered letter. This missive, a piece of forgotten history, was penned by none other than the legendary John Lennon.
The poignant words of Lennon's letter strike a chord in Danny's soul, igniting a desire for change. Leaving behind the intoxicating allure of touring, he embarks on a transformative journey to New Jersey, determined to mend the fractured bonds of family. There, he seeks to connect with his estranged son, Tom Donnelly (Bobby Cannavale) - a product of a fleeting relationship, whose mother passed away a decade ago.
Tom, now with a family of his own - his wife Samantha (Jennifer Garner) and their charming seven-year-old daughter, Hope (Giselle Eisenberg) - is initially wary of his father's unexpected appearance. As Danny navigates the challenges of newfound fatherhood, he simultaneously steps into the unfamiliar territory of normalcy. He checks into a Hilton hotel, his life of extravagance exchanged for the humble pleasure of a warm welcome from the young staff.
In the midst of this personal upheaval, a spark of romance flickers as Danny begins to woo the hotel manager, Mary (Annette Bening), adding another layer to his journey of self-discovery. Inspired by a true story, 'Danny Collins' is a tale of redemption and second chances, of family bonds and late-blooming love, all set against the backdrop of a man trying to redefine his life in the twilight of his career.
