Plot

In the heart of Montreal, an eclectic group of friends linked since their public school days finds themselves unexpectedly reunited in the enchanting movie, Dakota. When Tilly, the responsible one, leaves her sister Melanie's apartment under the care of the reckless Jack for a Broadway audition in New York, the stage is set for a unique convergence of lives and a deep dive into the essence of friendship. Unbeknownst to Tilly, Jack is nursing a fresh heartbreak after splitting with his girlfriend, Jessica. His vulnerability and an unforeseen incident at the apartment set off a chain reaction that draws their old gang back to Melanie's apartment, one by one. Brian, Jack's once inseparable best friend, flies back from Vancouver where he's been living in self-imposed isolation, working as a graphic designer. His sister, Jane, who is attending nursing school out of town, also comes rushing back. Doug, the family man with a new t-shirt business and a history of alcoholism, and Alan, the enigmatic telemarketer with a knack for inappropriate comments, complete the unexpected reunion. As Tilly returns early from New York, a sense of nostalgia washes over the group. For the first time in years, they find themselves in the same space, reminiscing over fun, games, and the good times of their youth. However, the cheerful reunion takes a dark twist, pushing them to reevaluate their friendships and confront the realities of their current lives. Amid the turmoil, Jack and Brian grapple with their past, their drift apart, and the reasons that led to their reunion. Dakota brings to the screen a vivid blend of friendship, love, lies, quarter-life crises, and breakdowns, all while exploring the undercurrents of human relationships. This offbeat dark comedy, filled with toy guns, telemarketing, fistfights and breakfast, invites viewers into a captivating journey of self-discovery in someone else's home. They're all here to figure out what went wrong, but they might just end up reminding each other - and themselves - of what went right.
