Plot

In the bustling corridors of a modern hospital, Dr. Werner Ernst (James Spader), a dedicated young resident, finds himself caught in a moral and legal storm. Drawn into a complex web of familial conflict, he must navigate the turbulent waters of a legal battle between two fiercely divided half-sisters, locked in disagreement over the fate of their comatose father. However, the air grows thick with suspicion as the underlying motives of the sisters become increasingly opaque. Is their conflict truly centered around the welfare of their incapacitated father, or does it conceal a more sinister battle for his ten million dollar fortune? As Werner grapples with this ethical dilemma, he must also face off against his eccentric and unyielding supervisor, whose primary concern is not the patients' well-being, but the thickness of their wallets. Under immense pressure from the hospital's legal team, Werner must tread a precarious line between his professional obligations and his desire to do what's best for the patient. In this riveting tale of medical ethics and family politics, "Critical Care" (1997) explores the blurred lines between duty and desire, care and capital, and life and death. The hospital's sterile walls bear witness to a drama that is anything but clinical, leading the viewers on a journey through the labyrinthine world of hospital bureaucracy and familial strife.
