Plot

In the bustling heart of New York's vibrant theater scene, the name Parker Ballantine is synonymous with brutal honesty and unyielding respect. As an esteemed theater critic, his words carry weight, influencing the fate of Broadway productions. His circle includes the crème de la crème of Broadway, including his ex-wife and actress, Ivy London, and the influential producer S.P. Champlain. Despite the potential for conflict, Parker's candid reviews don't mar these cherished friendships. Parker's life is shared with his devoted wife, Angie Ballantine, who accompanies him to show openings and patiently awaits his reviews in the newsroom. She also shares a loving bond with Parker and Ivy's son, John, who lives with them. Angie, known for her history of unfinished pursuits, takes everyone by surprise when she announces her intention to pen an autobiographical play about her formative years. Although Parker greets the news with skepticism, Angie persists, completing the first draft and eagerly seeking his opinion. His harsh critique, however, doesn't deter her; instead, it fuels her determination to see her play produced and prove him wrong. Her creative team, including Champlain and the rising, womanizing director Dion Kapakos, acknowledges the script's shortcomings but sees the potential for greatness beneath them. As the play embarks on its tumultuous journey towards production, encountering hurdles during out-of-town previews, Parker is faced with a dilemma. Will he let his personal connection to Angie cloud his professional judgment, or will he maintain his integrity as a critic even if it means jeopardizing his marriage? The stage is set, the curtains are drawn, and Parker must either recuse himself from reviewing Angie's play or risk the harmony of his marital life. Amidst the bright lights and echoing applause of Broadway, the drama of Critic's Choice unfolds, promising a captivating blend of professional duty and personal loyalty.
