In the shadowy depths of post-war cinema emerged the film known initially as "Counterblast," only to be shrouded in duplicity and rebranded as "Devil's Plot" in 1953. This change was a cunning move by distributor Herbert Bregstein, aimed at concealing the film's identity, as it had already been unveiled to the television-viewing public on both sides of the Atlantic.
The film unspools the chilling tale of Mervyn Johns, who masterfully portrays a Nazi doctor and escaped prisoner-of-war seeking refuge in the foggy streets of London. Underneath the city's stoic facade, he leverages the Nazi underground to morph into an Australian bacteriologist, a persona he acquires through cold-blooded murder.
Under this new identity, he delves into the world of medical research, a realm where science and intrigue collide. His sinister objective is to harness British expertise to develop an immunization against a deadly plague, a weapon the Nazis plan to wield in their forthcoming war.
However, the plot thickens as his British assistant, played by Robert Beatty, begins to harbor doubts about his actions. The tension escalates further when a young Australian woman who was acquainted with the real doctor emerges, adding another layer of complexity to this unnerving narrative.
