Plot

Struggling playwright Robert Longfellow, once hailed as the potential voice of his generation, now grapples with the bitter taste of another critically dismissed play. With his personal life also in turmoil, he finds his existence in New York City more suffocating than ever. In an impulsive quest for solace and inspiration, Robert returns to his roots in Reseda, Los Angeles, hoping to find respite in his aging mother's home and reignite old writing opportunities that had been simmering on life's back burner. Among these opportunities is a chance meeting with Emma Stiles, a successful screen actress and former lover, who found her footing in the limelight through Robert's plays. Their reunion after eight years promises a journey down memory lane, with the potential to rekindle lost sparks. However, Robert's homecoming takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Gus Williams, his childhood neighbor across the street. Gus, now a grizzled man of fifty-seven with a troubled past, still lives with his mother, his life a stark contrast to Robert's metropolitan existence. A casual invitation for a beer soon spirals into a night of unexpected terror when Gus, armed with a gun, takes Robert hostage in his own home. As the police swarm the quiet suburban street, Robert finds himself trapped in a deadly standoff. With his life hanging in the balance, he must navigate Gus's volatile mindset and unravel the mystery that has led to this harrowing predicity. As the tension escalates, Robert, in a desperate attempt to placate his captor, introduces Gus to the world of improvisational dialogue and dramatic exercises, using his craft as a lifeline. Their performance becomes a cathartic dance, evoking shared memories and buried truths, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. As the walls of the hostage situation close in, the pair find themselves in a high-stakes psychological duel that may either diffuse the situation or explode in an irreversible climax. In the shadow of danger, "Collaborator" paints a riveting portrait of two men teetering on the edge, their pasts intertwining in a narrative that will leave no soul unscathed.
