Plot

In the tumultuous year of 1918, amidst the throes of war, Annie Lee, a resilient mother, is left to fend for herself and her blended family when her husband is called away to serve in the War office. Abandoning the trappings of city life, she moves her brood to the romantic, rolling hills of Gloucestershire, the youngest of which is the frail Laurie, affectionately known as Loll. In this enchanting rural landscape, the family stumbles upon Granny Trill and Granny Wallon, two spirited matrons locked in an age-old rivalry. They also provide refuge to a young soldier who has defected from the army, harboring him in the dense woodland until his inevitable capture. During his school years, Loll and his comrades live in the shadow of the daunting teacher, Crabby. This reign of terror is abruptly ended when the formidable Spadge Hopkins stands up to her, restoring balance in their small schoolhouse. However, the true highlights of Loll's schooling are the mesmerizing Burdock sisters, Jo and Rosie. As Loll navigates the path from boyhood to manhood, he eventually leaves the comfort of home to carve his own path in the world. But not before savoring the innocent joys of adolescence, most notably, a taste of cider shared in the company of the enchanting Rosie.
