In the quaint Alaskan town of Trapper Falls, a decades-old rivalry is reignited when Mitch Bright (Daniel Baldwin), a successful attorney, returns after a 20-year absence. He crosses paths with the Reed brothers, Dan (Ted McGinley) and Greg (Brad Stein), his high school rivals who have not quite forgotten old grudges. As the Mayor of Trapper Falls, Dan is enthusiastically working on a platform for the town's cherished nativity scene, using city funds and property, which stirs a dispute with Mitch.
Mitch, still bearing the flame for Kristen (Nancy Stafford) – the woman who chose Dan over him, instigates a legal battle against the nativity display, citing a violation of the separation of church and state. The tension escalates when Mitch challenges Dan's mayoral position, accusing him of imposing his Christian beliefs on the town. Armed with charisma and the promise of economic growth, Mitch begins convincing local business owners to replace "Merry Christmas" with "Happy Holidays," subtly transforming the town's festive spirit.
Amidst the brewing storm, Dan and Kristen's children, Cody, a competitive skier preparing for the Christmas race, and Makayla, eagerly rehearsing for her role as an angel in the church's Christmas pageant, add to the familial dynamics.
An unexpected twist occurs when a judge rules against the nativity scene on city property, pushing Dan, Kristen and their Pastor to redefine their approach. Redirecting their focus from the contested nativity towards embodying the true spirit of Christmas, they begin to engage with their community in more meaningful and compassionate ways. This wave of goodwill permeates the town, subtly altering its atmosphere and, in time, even reaching the hardened heart of Mitch.
