Plot

"Chris & Don: A Love Story" (2007) is an intimate portrait of an unconventional and enduring love tale. This film intricately weaves together the lives of renowned British author Christopher Isherwood, the creative genius behind 'Cabaret' (1972), and his partner Don Bachardy, a gifted American portrait artist. Thirty years his junior, Bachardy's relationship with Isherwood spanned 34 years, a journey marked with trials and triumphs until Isherwood's death in 1986. The narrative unfolds through a tapestry of personal accounts from Bachardy, anecdotes from friends and historians, readings from Isherwood's diaries, and a treasure trove of archival footage, including their home movies. Isherwood's journey from England to Berlin, New York, and eventually Los Angeles, is explored as he seeks acceptance for his homosexuality. Parallelly, Bachardy's formative years unfold in Los Angeles, where, alongside his elder gay brother Ted, he navigates the city's gay scene and dreams of cinematic stardom. Their paths cross on Santa Monica Beach, blossoming into a partnership marked by artistic synergy. Bachardy molds himself, consciously or otherwise, into Isherwood's image, even adopting a British accent. Through Isherwood's famous friends, Bachardy is introduced to a world of glamour and fame. However, a pivotal event related to the filming of 'The Rose Tattoo' (1955) redirects Bachardy's ambitions from the silver screen to portraiture, a decision encouraged by Isherwood. This shift propels Bachardy to find his identity and voice, stirring the waters of their relationship. Bachardy and Isherwood's unique bond is further explored through their affectionate animal personae - Isherwood as the horse and Bachardy as the pussy cat, a coping mechanism during challenging times. Despite feeling overshadowed by Isherwood's fame, Bachardy forges ahead with his artistic career, finding fulfillment and independence. This newfound liberation makes him question his relationship with Isherwood, though love eventually wins. In the 1970s, the couple collaborates on several writing projects, most notably "Frankenstein: The True Story", a unique interpretation of Mary Shelley's iconic novel. Tragedy strikes in 1981 when Isherwood is diagnosed with prostate cancer. Bachardy devotes himself to nursing Isherwood, painting him exclusively during the last six months of his life. This becomes their final project, a testament to their enduring love. Following Isherwood's death, Bachardy's career continues to flourish, with his work featured in renowned collections worldwide, including the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Smithsonian Institute, and The Norton Simon Museum. His journey, from dreaming of stardom to finding his true calling, forms the heart of this intriguing love story. The film pays tribute to their lasting legacy, their courage in the face of societal norms, and the power of their enduring love.
