Plot

As the dawn of the 20th century unfurls in the heart of Paris, the world of the courtesans, the "les grandes horizontals," is painted with opulence and grandeur. Amidst the grand mansions, elegant cars, and obedient servants, resides young Fred Peloux, endearingly known as Chéri. Born into the world of former demimondaine, Charlotte Peloux, Chéri is an attractive youth, constantly surrounded by his mother's circle of friends, all high-class courtesans past their prime. Among these is Léa de Lonval, a fading beauty who has successfully navigated the courtesan landscape. Asked by Charlotte to guide her son, Léa soon finds herself in an unexpected affair with Chéri, a relationship that transcends the boundaries of love and lust, morphing into a connection that resonates with the warmth of a mother and the intimacy of a lover. Their relationship, lasting six surprising years, becomes a testament to their mutual attraction and understanding. However, the passage of time casts a harsh light on their age difference, creating a rift in their union. In an attempt to appease his mother, Chéri agrees to wed young Edmée, the sole daughter of a wealthy courtesan, despite his lack of affection for her. This abrupt end to their relationship leaves behind a void in Léa's life, leading her to question her feelings. Has she fallen in love with Chéri? And if so, do they have any choices? As Chéri attempts to return to Léa, their past and present collide, leaving them to navigate the intricacies of love, desire, and societal expectations.
